NREM (NON-rapid-eye-movement sleep) lasts about 90 minutes

  • Stage 1 very light sleep from which it is easy to wake up
  • Stage 2a slightly deeper sleep, lasts for about 15-20 minutes; characterized by short bursts of rapid, high amplitude brain waves known assleep spindles.
  • Stage 3 & 4- deep sleep; delta waves(slow, lazy brain waves) present

REM sleep is primarily characterized by movements of the eyes and is the fifth stage of sleep.

AP TEST ITEMS- Know REM sleep is highly correlated with dreams & that sleep spindles occur in Stage 2 sleep
